MB: Shocking! As stimulus spending continues to rise environmental conditions may be getting worse. In a must read article in the Boston Globe, Edward L. Glaeser identifies possible negative externalities from the President and Congress extending the home buyers tax credit of $8000.00. The main relationship between the two (tax credit and the environment) is that houses use an extraordinary large amount of energy much more than apartments, condos, or smaller than average homes. Encouraging more urban sprawl may leave a big carbon footprint. Glaeser does not simply criticize the tax credit, rather he provides several valid proposals that could minimize negative environmental effects from urban sprawl, while still providing some type of economic assistance to prospective home buyers.
