Failure to Succeed – Blame the Brain

Freakonomics: Before you commit to those New Year’s resolutions, you might want to read Jonah Lehrer’s recent article on the limitations of willpower. “Most of us assume that self-control is largely a character issue,” he writes, “and that we would follow through on our New Year’s resolutions if only we had a bit more discipline. But this research suggests that willpower itself is inherently limited, and that our January promises fail in large part because the brain wasn’t built for success.” Instead of trying to lose weight, quit smoking, and pay off your credit cards all at once, Lehrer suggests spreading those resolutions out so as not to overtax the brain.

By Candice Choi, AP Personal Finance Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s no mistake. This credit card’s interest rate is 79.9 percent.

The bloated APR is how First Premier Bank, a subprime credit card issuer, is skirting new regulations intended to curb abusive practices in the industry. It’s a strategy other subprime card issuers could start adopting to get around the new rules.

Typically, the First Premier card comes with a minimum of $256 in fees in the first year for a credit line of $250. Starting in February, however, a new law will cap such fees at 25 percent of a card’s credit line.

In a recent mailing for a preapproved card, First Premier lowers fees to just that limit — $75 in the first year for a credit line of $300. But the new law doesn’t set a cap on interest rates. Hence the 79.9 APR, up from the previous 9.9 percent.

MB: Shocking! For those of us who wish to avoid the outstanding interest rates of First Premier Banks credit card, the Visa Black Card is an alternative.  The new Visa Black Card takes luxury to a whole other level; offering 24/7 superior concierge service as one of their many benefits, also including a variety of insurance coverage’s and the best luxury rewards a credit card company can offer.  There is one problem however, it is nearly impossible to get approval; only 1% of Americans have the income and credit to get approval for the Visa Black Card.  Visa wants to ensure that only the richest and most prestige people in the world can use this product.

From The Economist:

Girls on Top

IT HAS been known for a while that stressful conditions such as famine result in more girls being born than happens in good times. The shift in the sex-ratio is tiny—around 1%—but in a large population that is still noticeable. A possible evolutionary explanation is that daughters are likely to mate and produce grandchildren regardless of condition, whereas weedy sons may fail in the struggle to have the chance to reproduce at all. In hard times, then, daughters are a safer evolutionary bet. Regardless of why the shift happens, though, it has long been argued that the moment when it happens is conception—or, more probably, implantation. A womb exposed to stress hormones, runs the hypothesis, is less likely to accommodate a male fetus.

A recently published study, however, suggests this ain’t necessarily so. According to Ralph Catalano of the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues, writing in the American Journal of Human Biology, stress-induced sex selection can take place long after conception and implantation.

Famines being rare in America these days, Dr Catalano and his colleagues used unemployment as their stressful event. They studied the birth records of the state of California from April 1995 to December 2007, and compared these with the number of new claims for unemployment insurance. Based on hints from earlier work, they looked specifically at unemployment claims that had wider social resonance than the firing of a few individuals—namely those in which an employer sacked 50 workers or more in one go. These mass lay-offs, it might be hypothesised, are more like natural catastrophes, such as famines, than isolated accidents that cause a few people to fall on hard times.

The researchers discovered that mass lay-offs did, indeed, lead to fewer boys being born. Over the whole period 52.4% of births were of boys. In some months, though, that fell as low as 51.2%. Teasing out the statistics suggested that the stress of mass lay-offs probably caused these drops, but that the lay-offs in question could happen months after conception. Male fetuses were, in other words, being spontaneously aborted—presumably as a consequence of stress.

Click here to see what this means for the original hypothesis.

MB: For more information on the links between wealth and breeding click here.  According to this theory and the one mentioned in an earlier post, in times of economic crisis, when incomes are lower, and high unemployment rates are steady, population growth rates should increase, and children that are being born during these times are more likely to be girls than boys.

Markets Far and Wide

LAS VEGAS — The owner of a brothel more than two hours’ drive from Las Vegas said she hopes to hire Nevada’s first legal male prostitutes within a month, now that state health officials have approved a method to test men for infectious diseases.

The world is ready for women, or even other men, to legally buy sex, said Shady Lady Ranch owner Bobbi Davis. Plus, being the first to offer male service could boost business in tough economic times, she said.

“With so many other male revues going on in Vegas, we thought it was time to give this a try,” Davis told The Associated Press.

Until now, men have been effectively barred from legally plying the world’s oldest profession in Nevada by the specificity of a state health law requiring prostitutes to undergo frequent cervical testing for sexually transmitted diseases.

The health board approved a regulation to allow urethral testing for men — a crucial rule change by the state agency with ultimate power over whether prostitutes can or can’t work.

For more than 25 years, no licensed female prostitute in Nevada has contracted HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, said George Flint, a Reno wedding chapel owner and longtime lobbyist for the Nevada Brothel Owners Association.

MB: Shocking! In a previous post Stimulus Spending is Like Crack, I expressed the relationships between drugs and government spending.  Both are fun and provide short, intense satisfaction, but ultimately increase the risks of long term issues.  However shocking this may be, a Corbett report attempts to show that the billions of arguably wasted tax dollars from stimulus spending is nothing compared to trillions of dollars used by the government each year, even week.  The report also states that  some of this money is lost, in the sense that nobody claims to know were it is or what it was used for.

The video is a bit outdated and some of the claims that are made are unreasonably unbelievable (such as the 9/11 accusation). None the less there are a number of astonishing facts about the amount of unnecessary money that are government and or Fed spends; and makes use question whether or not the Fed should be audited.

Las Angeles Crime May Help the Community

A LA Times Report

A group of civic activists, united by faith and a belief that the poor economy in the interior of Los Angeles is a social injustice, is preparing to offer bus tours of some of the grittiest pockets of the city, including decayed public housing, sites of deadly shootouts and streets ravaged by racial unrest.

After a VIP preview last weekend, L.A. Gang Tours expects to open to the public in January, giving tourists a look at the cradle of the nation’s gang culture — the birthplace of many of the city’s gangs, including Crips and Bloods, Florencia 13 and 18th Street.

"This is ground zero for a lot of the bad in this city. It could be ground zero for a lot of the good too," said Alfred Lomas, a former Florencia member who has become a leading gang intervention worker in South Los Angeles and is spearheading the tours. "This is true community empowerment."

The nonprofit group plans to offer two-hour tours at an initial cost of $65 per adult, with profits funneled back into the community through jobs, "franchised" tours in new areas and micro-loans to inner-city entrepreneurs. Early routes will focus largely on South L.A., with forays through Watts and Florence-Firestone.

The concept appears to have no equal in L.A. — for good reason, some might argue. It seems to echo, more than anything, the "slum tours" of such sites as India’s Dharavi township and Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. Those operations have been lauded as innovative economic tools and mechanisms for humanizing poverty — and also attacked as exploitative and voyeuristic.

The L.A. tour comes after months of planning, and is offered in a spirit of education and public service. Lomas, who will lead tours at first, plans to talk about important chapters in the development of the city’s core, such as how racist housing restrictions shaped ethnic enclaves and the formation of gangs.

Other aspects may raise eyebrows. Selling shirts painted on the spot by a graffiti "tagger" is one thing. But one backer said he also hopes to stage dance-offs between locals; tourists would pick a winner and fork over a cash prize. It wasn’t long ago that organizers decided against a plan to have kids shoot tourists with water pistols, followed by the sale of T-shirts that read: "I Got Shot in South-Central."

MB: I fully support any plans that have intentions of helping crime and poverty stricken areas; furthermore I feel that this plan may actually work. Americans are intrigued with crime; successful movies such as The Godfather Saga, Goodfellas, Colors, Dillinger, Scareface and others have proven America has a fascination with crime and gangs. However movies are not real, and no matter how effective the director is at getting a point across to its viewers the reality of crime and poverty can only be truly experienced if you have lived through it or seen it.

The point that should be made is that there is a market for this  type of tour, and the revenues generated will be put back into the community. More importantly once people see first-hand how horrible these areas are, they hopefully will begin to pay more attention and help in any way possible. The only concern that I see is, how receptive the individuals of the community will be. People in the community will become embarrassed or ashamed as busses drive past them like animals at a zoo. Two scenarios will come from this; one, they will react positively and change to avoid future ridicule, or two they will react negatively and rob the bus.

Free Sex in Denmark

MB: Shocking! I posted earlierthat recessions can lead to businesses taking desperate measures to attract consumers to their products and services. A company in Las Vegas used a truck with a clear glass back, fully loaded with a stripper pole, and an attractive half naked dancer to advertise their business.  This age old philosophy of using sex to sell  was taking literally by a group of prostitutes in Denmark.

First it must be known that in Denmark, it is legal to buy and sell sex. It is however not legal to profit off of anyone selling sex. (Except for the state I guess, since the women do pay taxes).  In a reaction to a slight conflict with hotel owners and the government the prostitutes of Denmark are holding a conference to promote their services.  Not only will there be a large quantity of beautiful women, anyone who comes to the conference will recieve free sex.  That’s right, hookers are offering free sex to anyone who comes to the Climate conference held in just a few days.  Buy your plane tickets now boys!

MB: We’ll start with a $100 dollar bill. Take your time scrolling down, or you will ruin the surprise.

$100

A packet of one hundred $100 bills is less than 1/2" thick and contains $10,000.

$10,000

Believe it or not, this next little pile is $1 million dollars (100 packets of $10,000).

$1,000,000 (one million dollars)

While a measly $1 million looked a little unimpressive, $100 million is a little more respectable.

$100,000,000 (one hundred million dollars)

And $1 BILLION dollars… now we’re really getting somewhere…

$1,000,000,000 (one billion dollars)

Next we’ll look at ONE TRILLION dollars. This is that number we’ve been hearing so much about. Ladies and gentlemen… I give you $1 trillion dollars…Do you see the little guy in the lower left side of the pile?Shocking!

Countries That Billionaires Can Buy

Castles in France. Islands in the Caribbean. Private jets. With a collective $1.27 trillion at their disposal, the members of The Forbes 400 could buy almost anything.

How about a country? A quick glance at the CIA Fact Book suggests the individual fortunes of many Forbes 400 members are as big as some of the world’s economies.

Bill Gates, America’s richest man with a net worth of $50 billion, has a personal balance sheet larger than the gross domestic product (GDP) of 140 countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Bolivia and Uruguay. The Microsoft ( MSFTnews - people ) visionary’s nest egg is just short of the GDP of Tanzania and Burma.

In Pictures: Countries Billionaires Could Buy

Warren Buffett, who lost $10 billion in the past 12 months and is this year’s Forbes 400 biggest dollar loser, still has a fortune the size of North Korea’s economy at $40 billion. (The Oracle of Omaha probably would steer clear of that investment, though.)

One Forbes 400 member does actually run a small chunk of a state in an official capacity: Mayor Michael Bloomberg. While he is busy serving as the chief executive of New York City and grappling with its sluggish economy, his own personal balance sheet–amassed through financial information services and media company Bloomberg LP–equals the value of all the goods and services produced in South Africa’s Republic of Zambia’s ($17.5 billion).

George Lucas, the famed Hollywood director behind the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises and ILM, the world’s most bankable special effects shop, has a $3 billion fortune, making him worth as much as the GDP of Guyana.

Hedge fund founder David Shaw’s $2.5 billion net worth parallels Belize’s marketplace.

MB: Shocking! Why are we all so intrigued by the rich, or better yet why do we care about how much they make?  The reason is because we rely on them.  In the fast pasted world in which we live in, it is easy to take our possessions for granted.  I noticed how much I rely on the products and services that billionaires provide us just this morning.

I woke up and had a glass of orange juice from Dole Foods (David Murdock).  While I was drinking my orange juice I got onto my HP computer, with an Intel processor, and performed my daily Google Searches. After that I started my homework which required me to use a variety of Microsoft Office applications.  It is now 10 am and I have already relied on the products and services of at least five billionaires.

Shocking!

Las Vegas Sun

Even the men who hand out “nude girls direct to your room” cards stopped their hawking long enough to do some gawking at the “stripper-mobile” as it rolled down the Strip on Monday night.

It’s akin to a small U-Haul truck but with Plexiglas surrounding the brightly lit cargo area instead of walls. In the middle is a gleaming stripper pole. Swinging around the pole is a scantily clad young woman. Two of her fellow strippers are in the back of the truck too, awaiting their turns.

Puttering up and down Las Vegas Boulevard on Monday night, it was photographed by nearly everyone it pulled alongside, from CityCenter construction workers to an SUV-load of 20-somethings from Colorado.

It’s the ultimate advertising vehicle, said Larry Beard, marketing director for Déjà Vu Showgirls. Having run the truck up and down the Strip late at night and into the wee hours for only the past 11 days, he claims it has doubled business at the all-nude Déjà Vu and Little Darlings gentlemen’s clubs.

“It’s just a great idea that really works,” Beard said.

If a couple of county commissioners get their way, however, it might soon be a late, great idea. Arguing that state and county laws prohibit the use of a public right of way for advertising-only vehicles, as well as the possibility that the distracting nature of the, ahem, advertising is such that it could cause accidents, commissioners plan to discuss it at Tuesday’s board meeting…..
